Nick Watt

Nick Watt is the Political Editor of Newsnight on BBC Two. Since his appointment in the spring of 2016, Nick’s notable stories have included the revelation that the UK Government is examining plans to continue making financial contributions to the EU budget after Brexit and the disclosure that the Chancellor would place a greater emphasis on fiscal policy in the autumn statement. Nick also made the first major in-depth film in the wake of the result into the EU referendum campaign with contributions from both sides.

Prior to joining the BBC, Nick was the Guardian’s Chief Political Correspondent. Alongside this role he has been a well-known figure on BBC and Sky News political programmes over the past two decades - he was also a panellist on Andrew Neil's Sunday Politics programme from 2012 and regularly appeared on BBC One’s This Week programme until his move to Newsnight in 2016.

He started his career at the Times where he served as its Ireland Correspondent, based in Belfast, during the final years of the troubles and the early years of the peace process. He then moved to the Guardian where he was the European Editor, based in Brussels – establishing himself as an authority on both UK and EU politics during his 26 year career in journalism.

Nick has a long track record of chairing events in an authoritative but humorous way.
