Liz MacKean

Liz is a freelance journalist and broadcaster whose work on Channel 4 Dispatches has included the programme "Hunted" - an expose of the vigilante gangs in Russia that hunt gay men for sport. The programme has been sold around the world. Liz has won two prestigious awards for the programme - Journalist of the Year at the Stonewall Awards and Best Current Affairs documentary programme at the Grierson Awards.

Another programme about the Rochdale MP Cyril Smith revealed how repeated police investigations had been blocked, leaving him free to offend.

Liz's career began at the BBC. She worked her way up through local radio and regional television and had a spell as Scotland Correspondent. She has presented numerous programmes including Newsnight, Breakfast News and Daily Politics.

She was the reporter on Newsnight who tried to expose Jimmy Savile as a sexual predator. The investigation was controversially dropped and an independent inquiry later concluded "the story should have run". Liz was recognised with a London Press Club Scoop of the Year award. She was also invited by the Director of Public Prosecutions to advise on the future handling of historic sex abuse cases.

Liz won the Daniel Pearl Award for Outstanding International Investigative Journalism for a series of exclusive reports about toxic dumping in West Africa.

She was named Journalist of the Decade award at the Stonewall Awards 2015.

Another highlight was a series of reports following the fortunes of four teenagers as they left the care system.

She was Newsnight's Ireland Correspondent, covering the years after the peace process.

Liz is an experienced conference speaker and event facilitator.

Speaking topics include "News Reporting in the Digital Age and the Risk to Reputations" and "The BBC in Crisis: Lessons of the Savile Affair."

She also lectures on the role of the media in emergency planning, journalism and currently advises the Independent Jersey Care Inquiry into abuse of children in the care system.

Away from work, Liz likes cooking and being outside and sometimes does both together. She has completed many bike rides to raise money for Action Medical Research, which finds cures for childhood illnesses, including the iconic London to Paris.
