Barbara Currie

Barbara CurrieBarbara Currie is the UK's foremost yoga expert and is the leader in sales of health and fitness videos including The Total Body Plan and Barbara Currie's Seven Secret's of Yoga. With over 30 years experience in health, she has appeared on television shows as diverse as Magpie, The James Whale Show and on GMTV teaching yoga and fitness. Barbara's Cellulite Beater became an overnight bestseller when Barbara first brought it to an audience on GMTV.

Her career started in 1960 when she became a state registered nurse, specialising in nutrition and metabolism. After becoming a glamorous mother of two, she then moved into modelling. In 1970 Barbara became interested in yoga and trained for three years to qualify as a Hatha yoga instructor, becoming a member of the Scottish Yoga Teachers' Association. Her approach to yoga was heavily influenced by Richard Hittleman, the then most famous yoga instructor in British television. She continued to teach yoga at a variety of health and fitness clubs, defining her individual techniques, whilst bringing up her children.

In 1993 Barbara founded her own school. Her classes began with just five attendees but this number increased dramatically to over 1000 members, with more signing up every week. Her pupils range from 12 to over 80 years old and come from all walks of life. Barbara attributes her success to a no-nonsense approach. She believes that most people want straightforward, result-oriented classes and are put off by the New Age style of teaching practised by some other organisations. Barbara says, "People come to me for numerous reasons including weight loss and the effects of ageing. They continue to use my techniques because they give them the agility of youth. They make people look and feel younger."

She firmly believes that the public has been conned long enough into buying the promises of all sorts of remedies to cure everything from a headache to cellulite, and that much of it is a waste of money. "Yoga is a holistic approach to well-being which has been used in India for over 2000 years but is equally to cure and prevent many of the ills today. My approach is not mystical, it is practical, fun and gets results fast."

When not teaching yoga, Barbara regularly contributes to magazines, radio and television shows.
