He is Jean and Rebecca Willard Professor of Classics and Professor of History at Stanford University in California. He has appeared on numerous TV shows in Britain and the US, and his most recent book is Why the West Rules--For Now: The Patterns of History and What they Reveal About the Future (Profile 2010).
